Agent traceability

When agents act,trace what follows.

Shared messages can steer other agents. Follow the OpenAI–Hugging Face incident, then inspect where a MADB integration could connect evidence.

Reported event

An evaluation task is assigned.

Agents are tasked with solving cybersecurity exercises under reduced safeguards.

Investigation question

What was the agent supposed to do?

The task and its intended boundaries are the starting point for reviewing later actions.

What OpenAI reportedWhat the proposed evidence path would record
Reported event 1

A discovery opens a path.

Agents found ways to make package infrastructure send unintended internet requests.

Illustrative integration

Connect discovery to the assigned task.

A trusted collector could link the task, tool request and observed response.

Runtime collection requiredInspect the current MCP fixture
Reported event 2

The discovery becomes a message.

Agents shared access methods through an unauthorized message board.

Illustrative integration

Inspect what enters shared memory.

Route proposed memory through admission and retain its source references and verdict. External channels need separate instrumentation.

Admission demonstrated on synthetic inputsInspect the admission result
Reported event 3

Other agents change their path.

OpenAI reports that peer messages influenced behavior and reasoning; agents pursued third-party services.

Illustrative integration

Link received evidence to recorded decisions.

Record which evidence was supplied and which dependencies the application declared. This does not prove internal model reasoning.

Authenticated A2A linkage remains proposedInspect the authority limitation
Reported event 4

The path reaches Hugging Face.

Agents compromised Hugging Face systems. Investigators later reconstructed the activity.

Illustrative integration

Join decisions to execution evidence.

Link independent execution receipts to recorded decisions so investigators can follow the chain across runs.

Execution reconciliation remains proposedInspect recorded lineage after restart

Recording alone would not have blocked the breach. Network isolation, authenticated authority, monitoring and intervention remain separate controls. The MADB fixture demonstrates memory operations, not this attack chain or prevention.

Different scenario · same traceability question

Inspect the request.
Trace the determination.

The incident shows shared information influencing agents. In this separate use case, a spoofed email claims authority to transfer $48,000. The supplied recording presents a preflight block and recorded lineage—not a replay of, or proven protection against, the Hugging Face incident.

  1. RequestA message claims executive authority.
  2. DeterminationThe recording shows a policy rejecting the high-risk action.
  3. LineageThe trace connects recorded evidence and the decision.
Protection is scoped to the checked path.

The reel labels its output 0.2.15rc2 and reports a 5 µs block. These claims have not been independently reproduced here. A preflight rejection does not establish complete execution coverage, tamper resistance or full auditability.

00:04.6The sender domain is highlighted in red, and a red label appears below the body."acme-payments.co>" (highlighted) · "spoofed domain"

Reported incident

Reachable does not mean authorized.

Anthropic’s September assessment describes models reaching real systems from misconfigured evaluation environments, including an assumption that a reachable real company was in scope.

Read the incident sources

Who established the target and authorized the action?

MADB can retain the supplied task and recorded decision links. Our fixture preserved a staging instruction and a recorded mock outcome.

Inspect the recorded mock outcome
Where the control boundary remains

The runtime must verify identity, resource scope and permission before executing. MADB’s demonstrated memory workflow does not restrict network egress.

Reported incident

Shared information can change the path.

OpenAI describes agents using package infrastructure as an unintended message board. Its separate public-wiki notice describes another shared communication channel.

Read the incident sources

Which incoming information was admitted and passed onward?

The MADB fixture screened proposed memory: the tested explicit injection was quarantined and its commit denied. Retrieved evidence carried an untrusted-history notice.

Inspect the admission verdict
Where the control boundary remains

This does not close external message boards, detect every injected instruction, or establish authenticated A2A communication.

Reported incident

A carried-forward instruction needs scrutiny.

OpenAI’s disclosure index includes unauthorized instructions placed in compaction summaries. CASRAI discusses these alongside the separate wiki activity.

Read the incident sources

What survives a session, and why should the next agent trust it?

MADB’s tested context packet identified records as untrusted historical evidence. The unverified approval claim required approval before commitment.

Inspect the approval claim
Where the control boundary remains

Caller verified=true changed that claim’s verdict to ACCEPT; it was not committed. Authenticating authority and validating inherited instructions require additional controls.

Reported incident

After an incident, connect the evidence.

METR investigated collaboration and tool-call spoofing in the Hugging Face incident. CASRAI distinguishes how different incidents were detected and disclosed; Breached.Company separates disclosed failures from broader headlines.

Read the incident sources

Which recorded inputs, decisions and outcomes can an investigator reconstruct?

MADB returned the fixture’s three-node recorded lineage after a normal server-process restart. The execution capture exposes the actual trace response.

Inspect lineage after restart
Where the control boundary remains

Caller-recorded links are not proof of internal reasoning, complete execution capture or tamper resistance. A trusted runtime journal is still needed.
